    General

I use FileCake to view a PDF document, but why there is an AcroRd32.exe process still alive after FileCake exits?  Top

Because we use Acrobat Reader ActiveX control to show the PDF document. During our test with Acrobat Reader 6.0, that ActiveX control didn't fully exit after the control user exits. This occurred on both FileCake and IE.
Such a process won't eat too much resource, and it can make the viewing of PDF faster.

I plan to use FileCake to search duplicate files in several big hard disks and expect millions of files will be found, any suggestion on large number of files?  Top

You need large RAM. We recommend 512M RAM for one million files.
If you have small RAM, e.g. only 128M, you should separate the search with different filters.
For example, you can firstly set name filter to include only "*.exe;*.dll;*.ocx" to find duplicate among programs, then set filter to include only "*.mp3" to find duplicate among mp3s, finally set filter to include all files but exclude all files that have been searched.
Such workaround may cause some duplicate files can't be detected, but it can still find many duplicate files for you.

I'm using FileCake to search tens of thousands of files, but why the progress bar is frozen at 99% for long time after about 100,000 files had been found?  Top

This is a technical issue. When FileCake starts to search files in given directories, it doesn't calculate the whole target files count, so it can't set the progress bar maximum value correctly. We set the maximum value with a fixed assumed file count, 100,000. So the progress bar will be always 99% after 100,000 files had been found.
In theory, it's possible to calculate all target files count before searching, but it will cost much time. Spending so much time to get a correct progress bar is unworthy.

Sometimes when I activate FileCake (switch from another program to FileCake), why it is being busy for a while and can't response anything? Is it a bug?  Top

It is not a bug. It's busy when being active because it's checking whether the files in the file list exist. If any files don't exist, it will remove them from the list. This may help to synchronize the files state. And usually this is really fast progress and only seems busy when thousands of files don't exist.

I "search in result" in the duplicate file groups with "Search in duplicate files only" checked, but why sometimes the new result's file count is less than the files in those duplicate groups? Is it a bug?  Top

It's not a bug. It's caused by some files that don't exist. When "Search in result" showing the found files, it will smartly delete the items from the file list that don't exist.

Seems the MD5 checksum is wrong when 'Ignore mp3 ID3 tag' is enabled, why?  Top

Because such checksum is computed base on partial of the file content. That's to say, the ID3 tag is excluded from the checksum.

    Security

Will FileCake delete or damage my files "smartly"?  Top

Never. FileCake will never delete or damage your files without your demand.

How can I find and delete all files that I've visited in IE?  Top

Usually IE stores the internet file in following locations,

Temporary Internet Files: Contain all the web documents include html documents, pictures, downloaded files and others. Usually it's safe and necessary for you to delete or wipe all files in this folder.
Cookies: Many websites use cookies to track your connection sessions. Some bad designed websites maybe even store your password, credit card number in it.
If you own your computer and no any others can use it, cookies make your internet life easier and happier. But if you share the computer with others, it's usually necessary for you to delete or wipe all cookies before others use the computer, especially after you've sent sensitive information such as credit card ID through the internet.
Temporary files: If you have installed programs from the internet, here may contain some temporary files. Usually files in this folder are not useful in the future.

All above folders can be quickly access by click 'Special' button.

    Register

How can I know whether the register code I input is correct or not?  Top

After input register code, the software will prompt you to restart the program to verify the code. If there is no any nag window when the software startup, your register code is correct.
You can also click menu 'Help' -> 'About' to see whether you're a registered user or not.
Typing the register code by hand can make incidental mistake. You'd better select the register code block in the email, then press key Ctrl+C to copy it. In the register window, press key Ctrl+V to paste it into the edit box.

Why doesn't my register code work?  Top

    The possible reason may be,
1, You didn't input the register code correctly. You should input the register user name, the email and the register code.
Email address is also one part of your register information, and you should input it as well as the user name.
After input the register code, you should restart the program to verify the register process.
That's to say, after input the register code, you should exit the program, and then run it again. If you continue using the program after input the key, the version is still unregistered until you restart it.
We'll put detail register instructions in the license key email, so you'd better read it carefully if you get any trouble when registering.
2, The email content in which you receive the register code has corrupted. If so, send us a mail and we'll re-send you the register code.
3, You get the register code from some pirate web site. If so, please remove our products from your disk or order a legal copy as soon as possible.

If you still can't register after following our instructions, feel free to contact us and we'll help you to register.

Tricks to speed up the searching

Disable anti-virus software's auto protect.  Top

If the auto protect feature is enabled, the anti-virus software may scan each files that found by FileCake. Scanning thousands of files may cost much time.
So if you expect large number of files will be searched, you'd better disable the auto protect feature before searching and enable it after the searching.
Follow this trick on your own risk!

Use "compare checksum", not to use 'compare content byte by byte"  Top

The checksum, MD5, is accurate enough for most usage and there is only very low chances for two different files have the same MD5. So MD5 is enough for you for most file type, e.g. video, mp3, text document, etc.
Comparing files content byte by byte may take much more time than calculating MD5, so you'd better usually not use this option except the files you're checking are very important to you.
Follow this trick on your own risk!

Use 'Merge file lists' function.  Top

If you have two or more hard disks to check duplicate, you can search each disk separately and synchronously, then save each result to file, and then merge them again.
This will save you much time comparing to only set one thread to search each disk one by one.
This trick is only useful when you have more than one physical disk. Using this trick on different partitions on single physical disk won't save you much time.

Use "Search in result" feature.  Top

    Tips to save your time

Don't save pictures or other content in Internet Explorer.  Top

Search and copy them from Internet Explorer cache (Temporary Internet Files).
If you're browsing a lot of pictures in the browser and like to save them to your local machine, save them in the browser one by one will waste you much time and maybe hurt your finger.
With FileCake, you can search all the pictures in the cache, and then copy them to any location.

Use "Auto rename" when copy/move large number of files.  Top

If you're copying or moving a lot of files come from different directories, most like there are many files with same name. This usually occurs in the internet browser cache.
With "Auto rename", you don't need to abort copying or rename them one by one.

    Use special directories.  Top

If you often visit some certain directories, adding them to special directories can save your time.
